Upon
learning of the world’s first Bahá'í House of Worship
in Ashkhabad, Russian Turkistan, American Bahá'ís
sought approval from ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, head of the Bahá'í
Faith, to build a Temple in the United States. With
His support, they gradually began to marshal their
efforts toward fulfillment of this grand vision.
‘Abdu’l-Bahá provided further guidance when Mrs.
Corinne True visited Him in ‘Akká, Israel, in 1907.
In 1908, the first portion of land was purchased
and subsequently marked with a humble stone through
the efforts of Mrs. Nettie Tobin. In 1909, the Bahá'í
Temple Unity was founded at a gathering of delegates
from Bahá'í communities across the nation in a first
step toward developing a unified national Bahá'í
community.
